Team Underground vs. Team DeFranco?

Last saturday was an Elite Fitness Seminar held at Joe DeFranco's facility, followed by the annual DeFranco Strongman Contest.

We brought 3 of our guys up for the high school division and man was there some KILLER action going on!

The seminar was awesome, with no holds barred Q & A going on the entire time, which is the way it should be - this is how we KNOW we're covering everything necessary, because it's up to YOU to ask the right questions and learn about what you want to learn about!

Simple concept, right?

Still, some people pay a lot of money and don't ask questions. Next time, just GRILL for all you got, don't be shy!!

Stay tuned for Joe D's Newsletter because he'll be posting some updates on last weekend's BIG show!

There must have been around 100 people in attendance, it was quite the day!

Next year we plan on brining MORE competitors!

Hope to see you there!

It was great meeting so many readers of ELITE FTS there!

Until the next time,

Am I addicted? Are you an addict?

I have been addicted to training since the first time I REALLY began training, which was 2 weeks before 8th grade ended.

I still remember squatting with 65 lbs. because that's the most I was able to press overhead!

I had Arnold's Encyclopedia opened up to the page where it teaches correct squat mechanics and that's how I learned to squat! Crazy, eh mate??!!

I'm still addicted to training.

Jim Wendler and I spoke about this at The DeFranco Seminar last Saturday. We loved the sport we played but we loved training more.

I'm addicted to all this "iron game" stuff, except now, I don't always lift iron, sometimes it's a keg, stone, tire or something else.

I have a few tires at the gym now, and sometimes I can't stop flipping them. It's an amazing full body movement and man does the heavy tire make you expend boat loads of energy.

At our upcoming Open House this Monday, I'm gonna pull out the 400 lb tire, and maybe the 600 lb tire as well.

Are you gonna try to flip the tires?
Which tire will you flip?
Prepare for it, you WILL get your hands dirty :)

I might have some sort of tire flipping contest as well - the winner will get ___________ (not sure yet, still thinking about it :)

The open house will be wild and crazy, if you're worried that your husband or wife, or girlfriend / boyfriend will get jealous, then bring your partner with you!

It's F-R-E-E!!!!

Time: 6 - 8 PM

Date: Monday, July 30

Address:

USC GYM / next to Apollon Gym

Do NOT dress nicely, you're only gonna get dirty, trust me :)

See you at The Underground!

How I Lost 9 lbs in 4.5 Weeks

My pants are falling off of me and my waist is shrinking more and more. It was easier than I thought, and, I didn't even TRY to lose the weight.

I weighed myself Saturday at DeFranco's Strongman Contest where 3 of our guys competed.

I weighed 215, before that my weight hovered around 225.

What did I do that was so different?

On the weekdays I cut out complex carbs except for my breakfast meal which is when I have oatmeal, either hot or I mix oats into a meal replacement shake.

My meals throughout the day included various meats, lots of fruit and veggies and tons of water.

On weekends I allow myself to have a few cheat meals. This might be some pizza, some cereal, sandwiches and soda.

My body doesn't respond well on a regular basis to these types of foods, who's body does?

But, the cycling of clean eating and some cheat meals on the weekend helped me lose a lot of fat and probably a lot of water weight. When I eat cereal or pizza I am extremely thirsty, but durig the week, all the fruit I eat and all the water and lean meats keeps me feeling great.

What about my training?

Lots of strongman training has been happening here at The Underground which is an excellent way for adding muscle and developing strength and power as well.

Do you need to cut off those last 7 - 9 lbs?

Maybe you need to adjust those carbs? I'm not a nutrition expert but just like my training, when I eat simple and basic the results come!

Kick ass till the next time,

--Zach--

PS - Wanna try some strongman training at The Underground? We just might have a little contest and see who can flip the tire the fastest for 3 reps, or maybe you'll have to use the prowler, or, will the prowler use YOU?

You can find out on Monday, July 30th at 6 Pm until 8 PM.

It's gonna be the baddest, toughest, most ass kicking Open House you've ever experienced.

Don't chicken out!

See you Monday :)

Gettin' Pumped and Gettin' Jacked

Getting a crazy pump is always a good feeling, packing on lean muscle and adding strength never gets boring either :)

Today, Nelson and I cranked out an upper body workout which lasted just under 35 minutes, talk about FAST!

Nelson Puentes is our intern and he is AWESOME!

Check out our upper body workout, very "Westside" inspired.

warm up: Nothing crazy here....some push ups and pull ups....

The workout:

1) Floor Press: worked up to 2 heavy sets of 2 reps

2A) incline DB press 3 x 5 - 10 reps

2B) mixed grip pull ups 3 x max reps

3A) 1 arm DB rows 2 x 8 - 12 reps

3B) blast strap push ups 2 x max reps

4A) band pushdowns 3 x 12 - 20 reps

4B) band face pulls 3 x 15 - 20 reps

5) 12 lb sledge hammer 1 x 24 swings

6) reverse hyper and abs for 2 sets each

Next workout will be lower body and some strongman work as Nelson prepares for his first ever Strongman contest at the end of August. All our athletes have been working on strongman training a lot lately and so have Nelson and I.

The strength and muscle gains we've experienced are downright freaky.

The speed development has been amazing as well!

More info on our strongman training soon, as well as a report of how we did at the annual DeFranco strongman contest - what a day that was!

Until the next time,

Want Some Combat Readiness Training

We have some freakin' beasts here at The USC Gym!

The training is getting nastier as competitions draw near and guys are able to handle higher intensity training.

We have guys preparing for The US Open in Judo (Future Olympians), Grapplers and MMA Fighters.

Our Combat Readiness program is taking their training to a whole new world!

Friday was brutal, and if you have some of these tools, give this a shot for 3 - 4 rounds! The kettlebell can be subbed out for dumbbells if necessary, no biggy there.

Warm up first, then....

1A) Kb snatch x 5 left / right
1B) max reps in pull ups (change pull up variation every set)
1C) sled drag forwards x 75 ft
1D) sled drag backwards x 75 ft.
1E) Tire Flips x 3 reps
1F) sandbag clean and squat combo x 5 reps
1G) push up variation x max reps
1H) tire flip x 3 reps

This is brutal!

Here are some substitution tools:

kettlebell = dumbbell

sled = tire

tractor tire flip = sandbag clean and press from floor

--------

When you combine this style of energy system work with your current regime of fight training your performance will begin to jump by leaps and bounds!

Not every workout is all out energy system work though, like us, you must find the healthy balance between all your training methods. The best way to discover what works if by doing it yourself!

Keep me posted on your training :)

Best,

--Z--
